It is famous for its miles of pristine shoreline, which is managed by the Trustees of the Reservation. For a fee, you can obtain an overland vehicle permit and drive your SUV onto the beach. Even in the height of the summer, this allows everyone to explore the Island and find a private spot to relax, swim and even do some fishing! 

Getting to the Island is by the 3 car ferry that operates year round. In the summer there can be very long lines, so best to check the Chappy Ferry Line Web Cams before heading over to go to the beach. The Island has no stores or gas stations and there is no bike path.

Its worth a trip to Chappy just to see the Mytoi Gardens. But, if you’re going there, take advantage of the tours offered by the Trustees (including kayaking) at the Cape Poge Wildlife Refuge. Chappaquiddick is home to the Dike Bridge, which is the location of a mystery involving Ted Kennedy and the death of Mary Jo Kopechne in 1969. This bridge is still in use today and provides access for vehicles to drive onto the beach.

There are many fantastic benefits of owning a home on Chappy. First, it provides the peacefulness of a secluded location, but is just moments away from the hustle and bustle of Edgartown Village. Second, if you’re interested in Chappy homes for sale, the cost of real estate is considerably less than Edgartown’s Historic district, due to having to cross on the ferry. Many homeowners on Chappy don’t find this to be an issue though, and will just park their cars in the small parking lot on the Chappy side and walk over on the ferry to go out to dinner or shopping.
